First world problems

on February 11, 2012

A few weeks ago I took my daughter shopping for her birthday. We picked up my niece in Champaign and headed to the mall. We weren’t too far down the road when we were stuck in some traffic. My niece commented, “My friend would say this is just a first world problem.” She then explained that in a third world country this wouldn’t be a problem because most people don’t have cars, let alone traffic. It made me thankful to have a car, and a car with heat too! It became our phrase for the night.

When we got to the mall and had to park somewhere further than we wanted…..first world problem! Wow! We GET to park at a shopping extravaganza. After an hour or two of shopping we sat down to eat. My back ached…..first world problem. We are so privileged to be able to buy food and sit in a beautiful atrium and eat! You get the idea. So last week when I received the call from the doctor that I had breast cancer, my first thought was “Okay God, you must be up to something!” and my second thought was “First World Problem”.

Really. I’m thankful that I’ve found some good doctors to help walk me through this, because in December my husband and I attended a meeting of some dear friends who are working in Kenya. They are helping to train women to do monthly breast exams in an effort to find breast cancer in its earliest stages. My husband Eric asked what happens when they find a lump. They replied, many times nothing can be done because they don’t have the means nor the access to medical facilities.

That night, after hearing our friends speak, I discovered the lump in my breast. Okay, to be totally honest, my husband discovered the lump in my breast *blush*. Obviously, I wasn’t doing a very good job at my self exams.

I scheduled my mammogram in January and had my biopsy Feb 1st. They called Feb 2nd with the news that it was cancerous. I have had a great peace about it all. I really do believe God knows what He’s doing. My hope continues to be in Him. Since I am still in the early stages of all this, I don’t really know much. I have been on a crash course in breast cancer terminology since I found out. The biopsy report indicates it’s Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, the  most common type of cancer. According to my oncologist it’s staged clinically at stage 1 (they won’t stage it officially until further testing is done). So, I would love and appreciate your prayers. My family and I have been memorizing Psalm 91 and find it very encouraging. I’ll post the words here.

Psalm 91

1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
3 Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare
and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
5 You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8 You will only observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.
9 If you make the Most High your dwelling—
even the LORD, who is my refuge—
10 then no harm will befall you,
no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread upon the lion and the cobra;
you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
14 “Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call upon me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life will I satisfy him
and show him my salvation.”

If you’d like to join me in praying I would sincerely appreciate it.

Father, thank You that You know all things. You know what is going on in my body and You know how to heal it and You work out everything for our good. Jesus, I ask You to heal me right now. Take away the cancer cells and replace them with new and healthy cells. Restore my body to the one you intended it to be. Thank You for the doctors and nurses and the wisdom You’ve given them to help bring my body back to full health. Thank You so much for the love and support of my friends and family. I am so blessed. You are such an awesome God. Thank You for the trials as well as the victories. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

  2. Laurie Kirby says:

    Lana, I surely will be praying for you to be healed. I’ve been praying for my son to be healed as he has been a diabetic for over 20 years and now it’s taking a real toll on him. He was hospitalized this December for having a seizure and going into a coma. I’ve also now discovered my blood glucose numbers are high by testing with his meter as a fluke. My son and I both need prayers. I will continue to keep you in my prayers and the best news in the world would be to hear you were healed.

    • Laurie – I’ve just read your comment and will be praying for you and your son, as well. I feel compelled to tell you a bit about my own family, hoping it will encourage you. I have been a Type 1 diabetic for 42 years, now. My brother, just younger than I am, has been a Type 1 diabetic for 46 years and my beloved daughter has been a Type 1 diabetic for 32 years, since she was 13 and in 7th grade.

      You are right, that being a diabetic for many years DOES take a real toll. I could sit here and share with you pages and pages of complications and health problems we’ve all had, but know this – through all, God has been with us and kept us healthy enough to be of service to Him. Many times it has been through our own troubles and perils, weaknesses and grief that we’ve been able to most effectively reach out to others around us. I pray that will be so with you and your son.

      My husband’s younger sister has been diabetic about 35 years, as well, and lives close by. His older half-brother is a Type 2 diabetic, with a son diabetic. Tom’s other brother’s son is a Type 1 diabetic, too, and in the past three or four months, my husband, Tom, has been having low blood sugar “crashes,” so I’ve got him lined up to see my endocrinologist. Our lives are SO complicated!

      But, then, life is that way. If you would like to email me, go to my blog (click on my name in blue to get there) and contact me from there. I cannot give out my email in public because of troubles I’ve had with a man who has been stalking me.

      God bless you, Laurie!

  3. Lana – I’ve subscribed to This Day’s Thought for several years now, having learned about it from one of my Christian blogging friends in Alabama (my husband & I live in South Mississippi, but I’m a native Texan). Thus, I’ve been reading your husband’s sermons on Sundays for that long, as well, and they have really been a blessing to me.

    Today – Sun. Feb. 19 – he asks us for prayers with and for you. I am a woman of deep faith, who spends most of my waking hours, even in the midst of doing many other things, talking with God, conversing with Him about my family, friends – EVERYTHING! I am already praying for you as I write this that the Lord will heal you. YOU already have the VICTORY in Christ Jesus, however things may go and Blessed Assurance.

    God be with you all,

    Dee Andrews

    Hi Lana, I learned of your news from Eric’s newsletter today. Know that I am praying for you and your family and that I will fast and pray with you on the 27th. Jesus is a healer. As Jesus is at the right hand of the Father so are we in this world! See yourself already healed! Greater is He who dwells in us than he whoz is of this world. Psalm 91 is one of my favorite scriptures that I pray over my family, friends and myself. It’s been called God’s atomic bomb shelter. 🙂 I pray this Psalm along with you and your family over you and your family. I thank God for your strength, peace, and faith. Continue to let God guide you through this and claiming your healing in Jesus name!

    Blessings with His Love,
    Dwan Avent

    I join these others in thanks for all you have blessed us with in your “This Day’s Thought,” and in prayers for your total healing and for the glory of God to be seen in your lives. I will also be praying for your whole family. God is so faithful and watches over His Word to perform it. He will perfect those things which concern us.

  10. Madeleine says:

    I’ve been subscribed to This Day’s Thought for quite some time. It carried me through some very rough times and I am so very grateful. I’ve never been one for believing in miracles, as I’ve never seen any. But, I have to tell you, boy, has that changed! I’ve seen and experienced so many miracles in the past 2 years, it’s amazing! We are actually experiencing miracles every single day, I think I just learned to open my eyes and SEE! Like you said, we are serving an awesome God Lana.
    I will join the many people praying for you.
    God bless you.
    With love from South Africa

  14. adekunle elizabeth says:

    Lana, the LORD is your strength and HE will remain yours. By the strip of JESUS you are healed.
    The LORD will perfect all our desires concerning your health,. Be encouraged that no matter what the medical report says, the report of the LORD is what we would believe. Hold on to the faith that produces good work and we shall testify concerning you and your family.

  15. Stacie says:

    Lana, I too like so many of these others, have subscribed to Eric’s ministry for years now and have been SO blessed to have this constant contact and reminder everyday with God’s word, love and truth! I BELIEVE and have FAITH in God’s Miraculous hand as I have seen it at work in my own life over the past 3 years in my marriage. God has brought my husband and I healing that ONLY HE can and worked such miracles that we are still together and happier than ever. Our church is currently doing a series based on “Crazy Love” by Frances Chan. Yesterday our message was on the chapter regarding Belief and Faith. GOD gives us SO many promises in the bible and for them he REQUIRES our FAITH!! God rewards us for our FAITH just like he did with Sarah and Abraham by giving them the ability to conceive a baby at 90 and 100 years of age……what an act of FAITH on their parts 🙂 I will be praying and believing in FAITH that GOD will heal you and use that healing to GLORIFY his name!!!

  18. Jess Lim says:

    Dear Lana,

    I am praying for you from Malaysia here. I am a cancer survivor and have gone through tremendous challenges, and have for the past few years requested prayers from your ministry. Each and every one of these challenges showed me we serve an Almighty God, full of love, compassion and mercy for us. My family and I experienced, still experiencing His miracles and healing power in our lives.
    Briefly, I was diagnosed with nasaphrangeal cancer in the nose area in Sept 1999. At that time, my son was 15 months old and was on breast milk. My daughter was 11 years old. It was a very difficult time for me. I was on my own because my husband was working out of our country. I chose not to finish my treatment after the radiotherapy treatment for I cannot imaging unable to be up and about for my children.
    I claimed all God’s healing verses from the Bible and change my lifestyle. I became a vegan for a few years. I also observed strict diet of fresh fruits, veggies and a mountain full of supplement. Having done all these, I believed I am still alive because the Lord heard my cries and pleas for the sake for my children, especially my little baby. God, in His mercy and kindness keep me alive all these years. PraiseThe Lord!
    I want you to know that, I shall be praying fervently and earnestly for you.
    May God Bless you with tremendous strength and determination to live.
    Yours sincerely

    Jess

    lana just like vickie I will keep youin my prayers. As believers we know that nothing happens by chance and God is in control. He made darknes and He made light and I believe in the midst of this crisis God’s light will be shone and He would be glorified. In addition for His total and complete healing. He created the earth from nothing and He can create you from nothing and He can re-create you and I am praying that His perfect Will be yours and that your Husband and family would see the hand of God and that they too would be taken to a new level in God and continue to fulfill His purpose and bring His Kingdom down.
